What other steps do I have to take after the court has taken a decision on the adoption?
The following documents are required for your child to leave:
1) decision on the adoption of Vilnius Regional Court;
2) a new birth certificate for your child;
3) the child’s passport;
4) a visa, if required by the laws of the receiving country;
5) Certificate of Eligibility for International Adoption.
A new birth certificate for your child
Once the court’s decision on the adoption has become final, the adoptive parents must apply to the civil registry office that registered the child’s birth to obtain a new birth certificate. The following documents must be submitted to the civil registry office:
1) copies of the adoptive parents’ passports (translated into Lithuanian and legalised);
2) a copy of the adoptive parents’ marriage certificate (translated into Lithuanian and legalised);
3) the original decision on the adoption of Vilnius Regional Court;
4) the original birth certificate of the adopted child.
The application for a new birth certificate is filled in by both adoptive parents. One of the adoptive parents may authorise the other, or both adoptive parents may authorise a third person to apply to the civil registry office for a new birth certificate.
A new birth certificate is usually issued on the same day.
The child’s passport
The child’s passport is issued by the migration office (passport office) in the child’s place of residence.
The following documents must be submitted to the migration authority:
1) A copy of the decision of Vilnius Regional Court;
2) copies of adoptive parents’ passports (translated into Lithuanian and legalised)
3) a copy of the child’s biological parents’ consent to the adoption, or a copy of the death certificate, or a copy of a court decision declaring the parents to be incapacitated or limiting parental authority indefinitely;
4) a copy of the child’s birth certificate;
5) a copy of the child’s birth record;
6) a copy of the mayor’s ordinance establishing temporary guardianship for the child, or a copy of a court decision (order) establishing permanent guardianship for the child;
7) a copy of the child’s new birth certificate;
8) black and white passport photos of your child;
9) bank receipt for the fee paid.
The application for a child’s passport must be signed by one of the adoptive parents.
The child must be present when applying for a child’s passport.
Since the child is going abroad permanently, a declaration of residence must be completed and signed by one of the adoptive parents when the child’s passport is collected.
A child’s passport is usually issued within 3-5 days.
Certificate of Eligibility for International Adoption
The Certificate of Eligibility for International Adoption is issued by the Service after the decision on the adoption of the Vilnius Regional Court.
